Renovations to Northview High School enter new phase

NORTHVIEW, Mich.— Renovations to Northview High School’s athletic facility enter a new phase in June.

The next phase will include repurposing the old pool into the fitness center, renovating the second floor mat room and adding new toilets. Crews already started building physical education and varsity locker rooms and the athletic lobby. 

Meanwhile work on a two-story, 18 classroom addition is nearly complete.  Construction crews are working on mechanical and electrical wiring to the new facility.  The first floor will contain locker commons and counseling offices; the second floor will also feature locker commons and language classrooms.

Mechanical and electrical rough-ins continue for the new special education classrooms, boiler room and electrical room. 

Northview High School hopes to have the fitness center finished by February 2014.  The natatorium and pool should be completed by October 2014.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, MIch.--  The Plainfield Township planning commission is recommending allowing two new digital billboards along U.S. 13.

Plainfield Township capped the number digital billboards allowed within township limits at 20; the additional proposed billboards would be the last two allowed under that limit. After getting the green light from the planning commission Tuesday, the proposal now goes to the township board for consideration.If approved, the billboards would be located along the highway at 320 Dodge Street and 6680 English Avenue.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, the  planning commission also recommended extending the streets of Belmont Village Green to allow for an additional 30 homes.   The commission also approved rezoning the southern end of the Thousand Oaks community to allow for 59 standalone condominiums, and a revised construction plan of a medical office building for Saint Mary’s Mercy Health Rockford.

All anglers can fish for free June 8 and 9.

As part of Free Fishing Weekend, the state is waiving all fishing license fees for residents and out-of-state visitors. Free Fishing Weekend applies to all species of fish in inland waters and Michigan’s Great Lakes.  All other fishing regulations still apply.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—  Community members are invites to remember and recognize veterans who served our country during a Memorial Day celebration at Veterans Memorial Park. 

The event will take place at 2 p.m. Monday May 27.  U.S. Representative Justin Amash is expected to take part in the ceremony.

Veterans Memorial Park is located at 5747 Belmont Avenue at Jupiter Avenue.

Plainfield Township begins search for new township clerk

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—The Plainfield Township Board of Trustees is accepting applications for township clerk.

On May 13, Plainfield Township clerk K. Scott Harvey sent a letter of resignation to the Board of Trustees. Harvey says he must leave his post because he and his wife have sold their home in Plainfield Township and are planning to move out of the area.  Elected officials are required to have lived in the community they represent for at least 30 days; they must also be a registered voter in their district.

During their regular meeting May 20, the Board of Trustees accepted Harvey’s resignation, which will take effect July 1.  During that meeting, the Board also officially began the search for Harvey’s replacement.

Residents who are interested in running for Plainfield Township clerk can pick up an application at the township offices, located at 6161 Belmont Ave.

'Healthier Home' featured during Spring Parade of Homes

ROCKFORD, Mich.—One of West Michigan’s first “Healthier Homes” will be on display during the 2013 Grand Rapids Spring Parade of Homes.

The home, located at 9309 Stone View Drive, is part of Sable Homes’ Stone Crest development in Rockford.  The 2,242 square foot house is the first of its kind in West Michigan to feature AirRenew gypsum board walls, which purify the air for 75 years, converting contaminants like formaldehyde into safe inert compounds. The walls are also moisture and mold resistant. It also contains latex paint and primer that  are free of volatile organic compounds.

The Spring Parade of Homes runs May 24 through June 8.  Tickets start at $10.
