Man arrested for more than 35 Kent County burglaries

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - The only reason nothing was taken from the Crushed Grape wine store is because the alarm went off.

"He jimmied open that door it took him longer to open the door than he was in the building," said store owner Gary Grier.

Grier says several businesses were targeted near Knapp's Corner in Grand Rapids Township.

"He's looking for an easy target or what he perceived as an easy target in his mind to get in to get out quickly, obtain either cash or something he can redeem for cash to support his drug habit," said Lt. Kevin Kelley of the Kent County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect was caught early Thursday morning in Grandville while trying to break into Belle Tire on 28th St. SW.

"When [Grandville Police] responded, they were able to apprehend a 32-year-old Plainfield Township man on the property and place him under arrest," said Lt. Kelley.

According to detectives, the suspect confessed to 35 burglaries and is linked to up to 50 in the city of Walker and in Grand Rapids, Plainfield and Alpine townships since June. The Belle Tire break in was the first in Grandville.
