All people who submit a story will be entered in a drawing for the gift card.  

Kent District Library has 18 branches throughout West Michigan, including in My Towns Alpine Township, Cascade Township, Comstock Park, East Grand Rapids, Grandville, Kentwood, Lowell,  Plainfield Township, Rockford, Walker and Wyoming.

Picnic Pops are Back

Picnic Pops begin this week at Cannonsburg featuring the Grand Rapids Symphony Pops Orchestra. This year’s line-up begins Thursday and Friday, July 11th & 12th, celebrating President Gerald Ford’s 100th Birthday, complete with fireworks both evenings.

Celtic Fiddle with Natalie MacMaster will be on stage on the 18th & 19th of July for the second week.

Gotta Dance with guest conductor Matt Catingub and guest vocalist Anita Hall will star the third week on stage. Dancers will dance through decades of different dance styles on July 25th & 26th.

Concluding this years’ Pops will be Abba, a band from Sweden that will salute the music of the ‘70s on August 1st & 2nd.

Grounds open at 5:30pm each Thursday and Friday with concert’s beginning at 8:00pm. Cannonsburg Ski Area is located at 6800 Cannonsburg Rd.

Duck Tape bus stops in West Michigan July 6-8

The 31-foot Duck Tape bus will roll into West Michigan this weekend.

Visitors to the bus can take part in a variety of activities, including iPad stations with tutorials on how to make a Duck Tape wallet as well as other projects, a fan photo wall,  Duck Tape formal wear and a seven-foot timeline of Duck Tape’s 70-year history.  There’s also a video and photo kiosk where you can share your Duck Tape story or snap a photo against a Duck Tape background and life-sized sculptures for more photo opportunities.

 The Duck Tape Rolls Across America tour schedule includes:

  • July 6: Meijer, 3757 Plainfield Ave. NE, My Town Plainfield/Northview
  • July 7:  Meijer, 1801 Marketplace Dr. SE, My Town Kentwood

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The list of businesses participating in Restaurant Week Grand Rapids is out.

So far, 68 restaurants have signed up to take part in the annual event, creating specialty three-course meals for $25. Participants include:

(Detroit Pistons) – Does your library or gym need a new look?

Here’s your chance to win a makeover in the School Makeover contest from the Detroit Pistons and NBA Live, Learn or Play, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.

The School Makeover, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance and the Detroit Pistons, is accepting submissions from elementary and middle schools in the state of Michigan, through June 1. Submissions at www.nba.com/pistons/farm-bureau-school-makeover should include at least four images of the school’s library or gymnasium to be considered in the selection process.

“Farm Bureau Insurance agents are involved in their local communities all across the state. Michigan isn’t just a market for us, it is our home,” said Vic Verchereau, Farm Bureau Insurance vice president of Marketing. “We firmly believe in supporting safe and clean learning environments for our youth.

Township looking for farmers market manager

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Plainfield Township officials are looking for a market manager to run the township’s farmers market.

The temporary, seasonal job pays $12 an hour and does not include benefits beyond those required by law.  The schedule would be 20 hours a week. For a more detailed job description, visit the township’s website.

The farmers market will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.  June 11 through October 10.

History buffs wanted!

(Plainfield Charter Township)-- The Plainfield Township Historical Preservation and Advisory Committee meets regularly to oversee the operation and maintenance of the Hyser House Historical Museum, and is tasked with protecting and preserving Township history. The Committee meets the fourth Tuesday of the month, January through March at Township Hall (6161 Belmont Avenue, NE) at 3:45 p.m. and May to November at the Hyser House Museum (6440 West River Drive, NE) at 6:00 p.m. All meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to share anything regarding Township history with the Committee.

The Hyser House Museum is open to the public the first Sunday of each month, May through December, from 2:00-4:30 p.m.
