Library takes in old and damaged flags for proper disposal

All of the Kent District Library branches are accepting old or damaged U.S. flags that can no longer fly.

Local Boy Scout troops plan to pick up the flags to properly dispose of them. The KDL Plainfield Township Branch even has a box in the lobby where you can drop off old flags.

Go Green Youth Challenge:  How to get fresh trees in your community

Applications are being accepted for the Go Green Youth Challenge tree planting grants.

Children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate.  Participants are challenged to collect change individually, with their class or with a club each spring.  The change will go toward community tree plantings by the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, as well as program outreach efforts.  The team that raises the most for the Go Green Youth Challenge will be awarded with a tree planning in their community.  They also get an invitation to the state Arbor Day celebration in April at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.

Throughout the summer, Nylaan Dental will offer Zumba classes at 7 p.m. every Tuesday, with proceeds benefitting a different non-profit organization.

On Tuesday, June 11, that organization is Crash's Landing &  Big Sid's Sanctuary.  The community is welcome to visit Nylaan Dental that evening  for a lot of outdoor fun with “a bunch of crazy cat ladies."  Participants are encouraged to donate $5 each to benefit the animal shelter.

Free child ID cards and child safety seat check June 8

Michigan State Police will be inspecting and teaching proper child car seat installation June 8, as part of  the Kids Care Event at K&M Dodge.

Families who attend the free safety event can also ahve their child fingerprinted for safety and peace of mind. Free child ID cards will also be provided.

The Kids Care Event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,  in conjunction with the Mopar Muscle Show.The Muscle Show has a $10 vehicle entry fee that benefits Kids Food Basket.  Public admission is free so come see cool cars and trucks, get some good food, have lots of fun and protect your children at the same time!

Northview High School Class of 2003 fundraiser June 8

NORTHVIEW, Mich.—Grab a meal at the Applebee’s on the East Beltline June 8 and help fund a reunion for the Northview High School Class of 2003.

The fundraiser runs Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Enjoy an all you can eat pancake and sausage breakfast for just $5.  A breakfast beverage is included in the price.

Eighth grade students take their lesson to the sidewalks

BELMONT, Mich.—Chandler Woods eighth grade students stepped out of the classroom to practice their lesson on limericks.

Students have been studying limericks, which are short, often humorous poems that are usually one to five lines long. On Tuesday, the eighth graders wrote their own limerick on the school’s sidewalks. Parents and students going in and out of the school have enjoyed reading the funny poems.

Rockford scouts bridge to new opportunities

The Rockford Service Unit of the Girl Scouts bridged more than 50 girls on Tuesday night in a ceremony at the Freshman Center gym.

The bridging ceremony promoted Daisies to Brownies, Brownies to Juniors, Juniors to Cadettes and Cadettes to Seniors. Two young women also bridged from Ambassador Scouts to Adults.  One by one, the girls are introduced and cross a ceremonial bridge, welcomed by older scouts.

Troop 3384 also celebrated their Bronze Award for their work at the Humane Society.

Scouts from Troop 2808 were honored with Silver Awards for repairing and renovating Camp Rockford.

Jessica Dickinson, who served as the Mistress of Ceremonies, was awarded the Gold Award for her work promoting awareness of Kawasaki Disease.
