GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Three NorthPointe Christian Middle School students have been named local winners in the 46th annual America & Me Essay Contest.

Awards were given to NorthPointe 8th graders Emily Clementz (third place), Alysabeth Richards (second place), and Abigail Lewkowski (first place), based on their essays addressing the topic “My Personal Michigan Hero.”

Emily and Alysabeth both look to their fathers as their inspirational Michigan heroes.  Emily wrote, “From before I could walk, my dad has been shaping my whole life.”  Alysabeth also recognized the impact her father has had on her: “My father has impacted me in unexplainable ways.  He has taught me to love, fight for what I believe, and be strong.”

First place winner Abigail’s personal Michigan hero was the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and everyone who works there.  Abigail witnessed the Helen DeVos Children Hospital’s care for her beloved sister as they helped her sister fight Toxic Shock Syndrome through a medically-induced coma.  She details the excellent care provided through the hospital, writing: “They helped us retain what we were so horribly close to losing and also helped us get through that tough time.”

Abigail concludes her essay with the significant long term impact the hospital’s care had on her.  She writes, “The ripple effect of their care has influenced me to consider a career as a nurse when I am older; I want to help save lives and…care for others…just as my heroes at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.”

Abigail’s essay advances to the state level competition, from which ten winners will be selected in April.
