Go Green Youth Challenge: How to get fresh trees in your community

Go Green Youth Challenge: How to get fresh trees in your community

Applications are being accepted for the Go Green Youth Challenge tree planting grants.

Children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate.  Participants are challenged to collect change individually, with their class or with a club each spring.  The change will go toward community tree plantings by the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, as well as program outreach efforts.  The team that raises the most for the Go Green Youth Challenge will be awarded with a tree planning in their community.  They also get an invitation to the state Arbor Day celebration in April at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing.

Local governments, public educational institutions, public libraries, non-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, neighborhood associations, churches and tribal governments can also apply for a Go Green youth Challenge tree planting grant by visiting this websit

Energy usage monitors now available for checkout at local library

If you have a card to the Kent District Library, you can now check your energy usage for free.

Visitors to the library can check out an energy usage monitor to gauge their home appliance electricity use.  Kent District Library launched the pilot program in February at its Englehardt branch in Lowell, through a partnership with Lowell Light & Power.  Consumers Energy is also backing the program.

Kent District Library has nearly 250,000 cardholders at 18 branches representing 26 Kent County communities.

Free program helps home and business owners deal with mercury

(ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY COMPANY)– The Environmental Quality Company is proud to partner with The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Mercury Collection Project.

This is an on-going effort to collect and properly recycle mercury.  Small and large business operations have traditionally been overlooked during mercury collection events.  The project’s objective is to address this issue and promote a long-term solution for easily collecting and recycling of mercury.  The program is free to anyone located in Michigan – residents included.

The program is easy.

WANTED: CAN TABS

Don’t forget. Students in the Daily Living Skills class at Northview High School are still collecting can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House here in Grand Rapids. Northview’s wonderful community members continue to drop off tabs by the bag full. We have already filled 15 jugs! The students are very hopeful that number will grow.

We are so thankful to the community for their support of this project and ask for your continued support. The pop tabs are a valuable resource for the Ronald McDonald House. They are recycled; generating much-needed funds to support the House and the nearly 500 families served each year.
