Some churches are having events on Good Friday (4/3) and some are not.  For further details and confirmations on any listing, you may want to call ahead.

-----NEWS RELEASE----KENT COUNTY, Mich. –Kent District Library is kicking off its second annual Genre Derby, an online crowdfunding effort aimed at reducing wait times for print and digital books by growing the library system’s collection of its most popular items. And every horse in this race wins; all money collected for a specific genre will be spent on materials in that genre only.

Christmas is over, which means it’s time to trash the tree.

Many municipalities are offering free tree recycling services to residents with a natural tree.  Some communities are planning to put the trees through a chipper and use the remnants to cover park trails and other green spaces.  Here is the schedule for live tree drop-offs:

Ada Township (Through Jan. 12)

  • Ada Township Park, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

 

Alpine Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Behind Township Hall, 5255 Alpine Ave. NW

 

Cannon Township (Through Jan. 10)

  • West side of the township building; RHS Honor Society will help unload trees Jan. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (donations encouraged)

 

Courtland Township (Through Jan. 31)

  • Fire Station #1 on 14 Mile Road

My Town: Goodwill Industries of Greater G.R. offers 'Annie' donation deal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Clean out your closets, help people find jobs and get a deal on tickets for Broadway Grand Rapids with the new deal by Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids.

The nonprofit organization is offering $20 off tickets to “Annie” to people who donate gently used clothing or household items to any Goodwill store. You can find the list of locations here. The coupon is good for select seats during the Jan. 13 performance at DeVos Performance Hall.  Goodwill will also be accepting gently used coats at DeVos Hall on opening night.

“Annie” runs through Jan. 13-18.  The musical is centered on a determined orphan who journeys through New York looking for her parents.  Her adventure includes foiling the plots of Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage; meeting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt; and finding a new home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

LOWELL, Mich.—Two out of three child car seats are being used incorrectly, and with holiday travel ramping up in the coming weeks, now is the time to make sure your little one is protected on the road.

The Lowell Fire Department will be hosting a free car seat safety check this Tuesday, Dec. 16 from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Officers and community volunteers will check each infant car seat and child booster seat to make sure they are correctly installed in your vehicle.  Qualified families can also purchase a discounted replacement seat, while supplies last.

The car seat safety check is part of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital’s Injury Prevention program. Similar events are planned for 2015 at the following times and locations:

NORTHVIEW, Mich.—Make room for new holiday gifts while helping Northview seniors during the high school’s Electronic Recycling Fundraiser.

Now through Feb, 1, supporters are encouraged to drop off old electronics at Comprenew, and let employees know their donation is for the Northview Class of 2015 fundraiser. 

Comprenew is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  Acceptable donations include:

  • Cell phones
  • Radios
  • Microwaves
  • VCRs
  • TVs
  • Laptops (all hard drives will be wiped out or destroyed)
  • Computer monitors, keyboards
  • Computer mouses
  • Printers
  • Speakers
  • Power Cords

Proceeds from the drop-off drive will go toward an all night party for the senior class.

My Town: Suit up and get ready to sweat during 'Go Santa Go' 5k

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.—Work off those Christmas cookies while helping families in need when the “Go Santa Go” 5k comes to Walker next month.

The family friendly 5k run/walk will unfold at Millennium Park.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank, which will be providing food to local families in need this holiday season.  Participants may also win prizes for best costume.
