Free child ID cards and child safety seat check June 8

Michigan State Police will be inspecting and teaching proper child car seat installation June 8, as part of  the Kids Care Event at K&M Dodge.

Families who attend the free safety event can also ahve their child fingerprinted for safety and peace of mind. Free child ID cards will also be provided.

The Kids Care Event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,  in conjunction with the Mopar Muscle Show.The Muscle Show has a $10 vehicle entry fee that benefits Kids Food Basket.  Public admission is free so come see cool cars and trucks, get some good food, have lots of fun and protect your children at the same time!

Fish for free June 8 & 9

All anglers can fish for free June 8 and 9.

As part of Free Fishing Weekend, the state is waiving all fishing license fees for residents and out-of-state visitors. Free Fishing Weekend applies to all species of fish in inland waters and Michigan’s Great Lakes.  All other fishing regulations still apply.

Michigan is home to more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, over 11,037 inland lakes and 36,350 miles of rivers and streams.  To find inland lakes in your area, click here.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—  Community members are invites to remember and recognize veterans who served our country during a Memorial Day celebration at Veterans Memorial Park. 

The event will take place at 2 p.m. Monday May 27.  U.S. Representative Justin Amash is expected to take part in the ceremony.

Veterans Memorial Park is located at 5747 Belmont Avenue at Jupiter Avenue.

'Healthier Home' featured during Spring Parade of Homes

ROCKFORD, Mich.—One of West Michigan’s first “Healthier Homes” will be on display during the 2013 Grand Rapids Spring Parade of Homes.

The home, located at 9309 Stone View Drive, is part of Sable Homes’ Stone Crest development in Rockford.  The 2,242 square foot house is the first of its kind in West Michigan to feature AirRenew gypsum board walls, which purify the air for 75 years, converting contaminants like formaldehyde into safe inert compounds. The walls are also moisture and mold resistant. It also contains latex paint and primer that  are free of volatile organic compounds.

The Spring Parade of Homes runs May 24 through June 8.  Tickets start at $10.

Sheriff's Department handing out kits to bring missing children home

According to the FBI, 800,000 children in the U.S. go missing every year.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is teaming up with the FBI to lower that number, by providing at-home child identification kits.

The kits contain an inkless fingerprint kit, DNA collection swab as well as other emergency information. Starting at 11 a.m.

Energy usage monitors now available for checkout at local library

If you have a card to the Kent District Library, you can now check your energy usage for free.

Visitors to the library can check out an energy usage monitor to gauge their home appliance electricity use.  Kent District Library launched the pilot program in February at its Englehardt branch in Lowell, through a partnership with Lowell Light & Power.  Consumers Energy is also backing the program.

Kent District Library has nearly 250,000 cardholders at 18 branches representing 26 Kent County communities.
