Ducklings rescued from drain on US-131

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) - If you were driving north on US-131 just past I-96 around midday Thursday, you might have witnessed Kent County Animal Control in action.

They were busy removing a family of ducks who had crossed the highway and fallen through a drain.

It started just before noon, when an off-duty Kent County Sheriff's Deputy witnessed several people stopping and swerving on the highway to avoid the animals. He was concerned about the ducks causing an accident, so he called Kent County Animal Control.

In the end, six out of the seven ducklings were rescued from the drain. The mother couldn't be found. The ducklings were taken to the Wildlife Rehab Center in Grand Rapids. They will eventually be returned to their natural habitat.
