Northview Public Schools - It's a "Yes"

Dear Parents, Family Members, Community Members, Students, and Staff:

Thank you for your careful consideration of the Bond Proposal. As a result, the proposal was approved by voters. While this is a very difficult economic time for many in our community, your vision for the future of Northview carried the vote.

Voters did a very detailed review of the components of the bond proposal, assessed the economic impact on their families and businesses and made an informed vote. Now we engage in the project planning process and I assure you we will share the timelines with the entire community. You will be able to track our progress at www.nvps.net.

Good Morning All,

Today you have the opportunity to cast a vote on the future of the Northview Public Schools. As many of you know, several in our community received a "robo-call" last night that was in opposition to the bond proposal. This call was financed by the Kent County Taxpayers Alliance. The leaders of this group do not live in Northview nor have they made the decision to use the "schools of choice" process. They have come out in opposition to other tax proposals on the ballot in Kent County.

We are open, transparent, and forthright with our Northview community. The May 8, 2012 bond request continues to promote Northview’s educational excellence and strong community. It makes a great public school system even better. Outstanding communities are known for their excellent schools.

There is a collective spirit among families, board members, staff and the community to “do the right thing” for our students and the Northview community. We invest for the future. Our children deserve the very best we can offer. Our community expects nothing less.

NVPS - Did You Mark Your Calendar for May 8?

REMEMBER TO VOTE ON MAY 8, 2012. The bond proposal being placed before voters is more than a replacement pool. It is also a major renovation of the athletic/activities wing of the high school. The renovations to the athletic/activity wing and tennis courts are estimated at $5 million. The new pool and diving area is estimated at $6.9 million.If approved by voters this will ensure the entire high school is in good shape for the next 30 years.

NVPS - Bond Proposal Tax Calculator

The "tax calculator" is now up and running! Click below to obtain a very accurate estimate of what it will cost individual tax payers if this proposal passes on May 8, 2012.

This is the net tax increase after filing State and Federal tax returns. It takes into account the new Michigan Public Act 38 conditions (passed by the legislature last year).

Try it out with your data and inform others that it is on the webpage and is user friendly. You simply indicate which township you live in (Ada, Plainfield, Grand Rapids), enter your annual household income, the taxable value of your home (1/2 the assessed value), indicate if you are 65 or older (yes/no), and if you itemize your taxes (yes/no). All these items are in blue boxes. Then look to the green boxes below to see you "net tax increase" for the year and how much per month.

NVPS - Update on Legislative Consideration of Full Day Kindergarten

As you may be aware, the Michigan Legislature is deliberating whether or not to force school districts to implement the "full-day kindergarten" legislation for the 2012/13 school year (next year). Currently the State funds half-day kindergarten students at a full-day per student rate (like students in grades 1 - 12). The legislators are now debating whether or not to cut funding to half for half-day students and only fully fund full-day if kindergarten students attend full day.

Presidential Primary Election - February 28, 2012

This will be a CLOSED primary election, which means that a registered voter wishing to participate in this election will HAVE to declare a party (Democrat or Republican) in order to receive a ballot and that voter will be issued a ballot from that particular party ONLY.

Last day to register to vote in this Presidential Primary – January 30, 2012.

Absentee Voting:
Absent Voter applications are available at the Plainfield Township Clerk’s office located at the 6161 Belmont Avenue, Belmont, MI 49306 or by contacting Stephanie at 726-8884 or mcmillens@plainfieldchartertwp.org and the application can be mailed to you.
