My Town Plainfield: 10 Mile Park gets new name

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—  Plainfield Township's newest park has a new name and logo.

Earlier this month, the township board voted 4-3 to name the park on 10 Mile Road between U.S. 131 and the City of Rockford "Plainfield Township Premier Park."   The name came from a public naming contest that generated more than 90 entries.  

More than 50 logo ideas were also submitted.  The board  unanimously approved adopting a Plainfield Township Premier Park logo design that includes the township logo.  The township may also consider adopting the logo design for other parks within the township.

The person or people who submitted the winning name and  winning logo will each be awarded a $250 prize.

My Town Plainfield Township: Farmer's Market opens for the season June 10

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.— Shoppers will have even more time to enjoy the Plainfield Township Farmer’s Market this year.

The market will open for the season on June 10 with longer hours, from noon to 6 p.m.  As in previous years, the market will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays through October 9.   The Plainfield Township Farmer’s Market will be located at 4411 Plainfield Avenue NE in front of Frontline Church, located at the corner of 5 Mile Road and Plainfield Avenue.  Organizers say dozens of vendors have signed up to showcase their wares, produce and flowers at the market.  This year’s vendors include three bakeries, a beekeeper, kettle corn producer, an organic meat purveyor and more.

My Town: Northview Board of Education looking for members

NORTHVIEW, Mich.—The Northview Board of Education is looking for four new members.

The board needs to fill the seats currently held by Tim Detwiler, Lisa Gendler, Alicia Keur and Doug LaFleur. Two seats are for a four-year term ending Dec. 31, 2018; the remaining two seats are for a six-year term ending Dec. 31, 2020.

Nominating petitions and affidavits of identity must be filed at the Kent County Clerk’s Office by 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 22.  The seats will be filled during the school election Tuesday, Nov. 4.    Nominees must be registered electors of Northview Public Schools by the filing deadline.

My Town Plainfield: Public hearing over sewer system upgrades June 12

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—The public is encouraged to attend a hearing June 12 to weigh in on proposed upgrades to the township’s sewer system.

The $6 million project would include:

  • Constructing approximately 6,000 feet of 12‐inch sanitary sewer and installing new manholes from Ten Mile Road to the Childsdale Avenue area.
  • Removing and replacing six northerly trunk sewer inverted siphons located under the Rogue River with river crossing pipe.
  • Improve flood protection at the Forest Ridge Lift Station.
  • Improve the collection system at the Comstock Park Area Trunk Sewer.

The project would lead to higher operation and maintenance costs for the fiscal year, costing each resident an additional $2.40 per month.

My Town Plainfield: Township strategic planning session May 21

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—  Plainfield Township leaders will hold a special meeting this Wednesday, May 21 to map out the community’s future.

The strategic planning session will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Plainfield Charter Township Hall, located at 6161 Belmont Ave. in Belmont.  The public is invited to listen in on the meeting which will address SWOT- strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the township as leaders try to map out the bigger picture.

My Town Plainfield: Public hearing May 19 for company tax break

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Community members are encouraged to weigh in on a tax break request for a company that’s expanding.

AvaSure, LLC is asking for a three-year abatement on $57,500 worth of personal property, with the possibility of a five-year extension on the tax incentive.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19 at the Township Offices, located at 6161 Belmont Avenue NE.

My Town: Dedicated Veterans Millage moves forward for consideration

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—As Memorial Day approaches, Kent County Commissioners are getting ready to hear a proposal to create a millage to support county veterans.

The proposed Dedicated Veterans Millage would be for .050 mill, generating slightly more than $1 million for veteran outreach and emergency services.  The measure would also more than double available federal claims assistance hours. 

On May 8, the Kent County Board of Commissioners Millage Subcommittee unanimously supported forwarding the millage request onto the Finance and Physical Resources Committee for consideration. The proposal will be discussed at the Kent County Commission’s finance meeting Tuesday, May 20 at 8:30 a.m.  Supporters hope to get the millage on the November ballot.
