PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—  The Plainfield Township Board is whittling down the naming choices for the township’s newest park.

The park is located south of 10 Mile Road between U.S. 131 and the City of Rockford.  Once it’s complete, the park will feature a BMX bicycling track, mountain biking trails, an indoor archery range, two soccer fields, basketball courts and a sledding hill.  Additionally, the park shares an entrance with the new Art Van Sports Complex, which will feature eight tournament quality baseball/softball fields and the Miracle Field- a custom-built rubber surface baseball facility for athletes with special needs.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Plainfield Township officials will hold a public information session at the Plainfield Public Library at 2650 Five Mile Road NE on May 7 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the upcoming Sawkaw area water / sewer project and answer resident’s questions.  Anyone with interest in this project is invited to attend.

The “Sawkaw Project” includes replacing all the water and sanitary sewer lines as well as some storm sewer lines throughout the neighborhood.  All affected streets will be repaved and sidewalks replaced.  The roads will be reconstructed as part of a cost-sharing agreement with the Kent Country Road Commission.

“We decided to do it all at once,” said Rick Solle, director of public services for  Plainfield Township.  “Getting it all done now means we won’t have to go back for 25, maybe 35 years.”

My Town: Voters renew millages for Comstock Park and Northview Schools

KENT COUNTY, Mich.—A fund that pays for repairing facilities and purchasing property for Comstock Park Public Schools  will continue on for another decade.

In a 591-237 vote Tuesday, voters approved renewing a 0.9984 millage that would go toward the district's Building and Site Sinking Fund.  The renewal means the owner of a home with a taxable valuation of $100,000 can expect to pay $99.84 per year.

Tuesday night, voters also approved renewing a millage for Northview Public Schools' Building and Site Sinking Fund for another ten years.  The proposal passed overwhelmingly- 1,425 votes to 521 votes. The rate is limited to 1.2056 mills, or approximately $120.56 per home with a taxable valuation of $100,00. Funding will go toward school property purchases and construction and upkeep of schools.

My Town: Outdoor Farmer's Market to feature more than 50 vendors

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— The Outdoor Farmer’s Market in downtown Grand Rapids will open for its second season this weekend.

Grand Rapids Downtown Market says the new season of outdoor shopping will start Saturday May 3.  The outdoor market will be open every Saturday in May, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The market will host its inaugural “Chefs at The Market” demonstration at 10 a.m.  A chef will showcase simple recipes you can follow using food available at the market.  This weekend’s demonstration will feature rhubarb.

Inside the market, visitors can take part in a free yoga session and enjoy live jazz music by Hugh DeWitt.  At noon, shoppers can also enjoy microgreens grown in the market’s greenhouse as part of a $5 tasting bar.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.—Explore the Hyser Rivers Museum for free during its annual open house this weekend.

The event is Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This year’s open house theme is “Past Times”, so the event will feature pastimes enjoyed by Americans years ago.

The annual open house is being hosted by  the Plainfield Township Historical Preservation Committee.

My Town Plainfield Township: Farmer's Market to return with extended hours

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.— Shoppers will have even more time to enjoy the Plainfield Township Farmer’s Market this year.

The market will open for the season on June 10 with longer hours, from noon to 6 p.m.  As in previous years, the market will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays through October 9.   The Plainfield Township Farmer’s Market will be located at 4411 Plainfield Avenue NE in front of Frontline Church, located at the corner of 5 Mile Road and Plainfield Avenue.  Organizers say more than 20 local vendors have already signed up to showcase their wares, produce and flowers at the market.  This year’s vendors include three bakeries, a beekeeper, kettle corn producer, an organic meat purveyor and more.  The township expects to add another 10 to 20 vendors to the market by mid-season.

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. --- A special election is being held May 6 for three Plainfield Township school systems:  Comstock Park, Northview and Rockford public schools.

Comstock Park Public Schools Superintendent Ethan Ebenstein said, “We are asking voters to renew our... sinking fund millage for another ten years on May 6.  This important source of special revenue helps the district make annual repairs and meet ongoing maintenance needs without taking funds from our operational classroom budget.” 

Ebenstein added, “We have an outstanding supportive community that takes great pride in our grounds and facilities, and we are seeking their assistance in helping maintain the facilities we have.”
