NORTHVIEW, Mich.—Northview High School has unveiled its tribute to a Metro Health program aimed at saving student lives.

Keeping the Beat is a student heart screening program Metro Health offers to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death in youth.    The heart screenings are free to high school students ages 14-18. 

Late last month, someone posted this lip dub video by Northview High School on YouTube, in honor of the Keeping the Beat program.  It took approximately 1,200 students and staff members to pull off the production.

Whitehall Middle School students help knock out hunger

WHITEHALL, Mich.—Whitehall Middle School is giving hunger in West Michigan the one-two-three punch.

Students have been helping Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank by sorting food in the warehouse, funding mobile food pantries and collecting 68 pounds of plastic for TerraCycle, which makes a donation to the food bank in return for the clean recyclables it collects.  For more information on the recycleable donation program through Terracycle, click here.

New smart phone app connects parents to child's school

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—National Heritage Academies is offering a new smart phone app to connect parents to their child’s school work.

The app provides instant access to student grades, school news and meal balance accounts.  Parents can also contact their child’s teacher or search the school’s online carpooling database.  

“We are proud to offer this technology to our parents,” said Ridge Park Charter Academy Principal Emory Wykoff. “The app allows them to find information located on the school website, but eliminates the need to have an Internet connection.”

BELMONT, Mich.—Chandler Woods Charter Academy is opening its doors to prospective students and their parents Thursday, Jan. 30.

The kindergarten enrollment information meeting will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visitors can learn more about the program, how to enroll, educational benefits and general information about the school.  Parents can also meet the staff and tour the school building.

Enrollment is for the 2014/2015 school year.  Chandler Woods Charter Academy, operated by National Heritage Academies, is a free public charter school serving students in grades kindergarten through eighth.

Save A Life Tour visits Northview High School Jan. 29

NORTHVIEW, Mich.—The International Save A Life Tour is coming to Northview High School.

The multi-media program will take place Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  The program provides two multi-million dollar simulators to students, so they can experience how texting and drinking alcohol can impact their driving.

The National Save A Life Tour has been endorsed by high schools, colleges, the military and hospitals nationwide.  The program is focused on curbing dangerous driving habits that kill or injure thousands of people each year.

KENTWOOD, Mich.—Tax season is almost here and Davenport University is ready to help.

Student and faculty volunteers from Davenport will begin offering free income tax preparation sessions to low- and middle-income tax filers Thursday, Jan. 23.  The service is available on a first come, first serve basis to families making less than $55,000 in total household income.  People who want to utilize the program should bring the following materials:
