Spring Parade of Homes sees record traffic

The Home Builders Association of Greater Grand Rapids says the 2013 Spring Parade of Homes is seeing record traffic.

The organization says more than 50,000 people have toured homes so far.  The Spring Parade of Homes runs through June 8.  Remodeled homes will be open for touring June 7 and June 8 from 1 p.m.

ROCKFORD, Mich.—One of West Michigan’s first “Healthier Homes” will be on display during the 2013 Grand Rapids Spring Parade of Homes.

The home, located at 9309 Stone View Drive, is part of Sable Homes’ Stone Crest development in Rockford.  The 2,242 square foot house is the first of its kind in West Michigan to feature AirRenew gypsum board walls, which purify the air for 75 years, converting contaminants like formaldehyde into safe inert compounds. The walls are also moisture and mold resistant. It also contains latex paint and primer that  are free of volatile organic compounds.

The Spring Parade of Homes runs May 24 through June 8.  Tickets start at $10.

Michigan Historical Commission approves tribute to Meijer family

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Grand Rapids is getting another tribute to the men behind Meijer Stores.

On May 8, the Michigan Historical Commission approved a marker to honor Hendrik and Fred Meijer, who in 1962 became the first grocers to combine two popular retail models—discount department stores and supermarkets—into a single store on 28th Street, called “Thrifty Acres.”  The Meijers then took their model to Holland and Muskegon. 

Meijer now has nearly 200 stores across the Midwest, including Kalamazoo, Walker, Wyoming, Jenison, Rockford, Plainfield Township, Forest Hills, Lowell, Grandville, Kentwood, Grand Haven and Greenville, where Hendrik Meijer opened his very first store in the 1930s.

The new historical marker will be added to more than 1,700 green and gold signs found across the state, that chronicle the people, places and events that make Michigan’s heritage unique and unforgettable.  The historical markers are nominated by spons

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Experience Grand Rapids and the Kent County Lodging Association have opened the 6th Annual WAVE Award nominations.

The annual awards program recognizes outstanding service providers in the Grand Rapids and Kent County hospitality industry. Nominations will be accepted from employers and guests from April 30 to Oct.7, 2013. One award will be presented in each of the following categories: Transportation, Retail & Service, Attractions/Events, and Nightlife. New categories to the 2013 awards program include: Restaurants/Breweries, Lodging, and Volunteer in Hospitality.

Goodwill opening new donation center in Plainfield Twp.

Plainfield Township - Goodwill Industries of Greater Grand Rapids has announced the opening of a new attended donation center in Plainfield Township.

The center will hold its grand opening Saturday, April 13 at 9am. It is located at 5429 Northland Drive just south of Cannonsburg Road. Normal business hours will be from 9am-6pm Monday through Saturday and noon-5pm on Sunday.

The Northland Drive donation center is the seventh one in the Grand Rapids area.

"Our goal is to make the process of donating to Goodwill as convenient as possible," Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Jill Wallace said in a statement. "Donations are vital for Goodwill to help fund our career services for individuals seeking employment right here in our community."

The donation center features a lobby area with donation bins and a sorting area to help in the distribution of donations to Goodwill stores.

If you'd like to make an upcoming trip to Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant, you can join an upcoming one with the Seniors Group in April.
