Human Interest Story - What a Difference a Letter can make

Human Interest Story - What a Difference a Letter can make

In this day and age, a personal letter from someone seems to be a rarity. Not so though with my friend and former neighbor, Sally Howard.

Sally has a hobby of collecting autographs from “Potentially Famous People” and has done it for years, knowing that one day one of these autographs will pay off, whether in notoriety or value. She has hundreds of them filed away in order.

Just recently, Sally told me a story about an unusual experience she had and how it turned out. This is her story:

Sally attended the Michigan State Diving Championship meet in March of this year being her grandson, Cameron, a sophomore, was diving for Grandville High School. She said, “While I was attending, I got the chance of a lifetime to experience the true meaning of what it takes to be outstanding in performance and character. Sally is referring to Will Brenner who is a senior at Huron High School in Ann Arbor, MI.

My Town: Army of volunteers needed to pull off LPGA event

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.— Nearly 150 top women golfers will return to Blythefield Country Club again this year to compete, and hundreds of volunteers are needed to pull it all off.

Meijer says more than 700 people pitched in during last year’s Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft.  This year, organizers opened volunteer registration a month earlier, in hopes of attracting even more help for this year’s event.  Positions range from marshals and standard bearers to assisting the media. The volunteer fee is $55 and includes:

  • Two official tournament golf shirts
  • Tournament hat
  • Volunteer badge valid for week-long tournament access and parking
  • Four weekly grounds tickets for guests
  • Invitation to the volunteer appreciation part
  • Meals and beverages during assigned shifts

Organizers need an estimated 800 volunteers this year.

My Town Plainfield Township: Seasonal pass prices rise for residents

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich.-- Some visitors to Versluis Park will have to pay more this season.

The Plainfield Township Board recently approved increasing the price of residential season park passes from $20 to $25, effective Jan. 1.  Planfield Township Superintendent Cameran VanWyngarden says non-resident season passes and single day rates remain the same, at $75 and $10 per car, respectively.

"We believe the new season pass rate remains a remarkable value for Plainfield Township residents," VanWyngarden said in a statement to WZZM 13.
